Narrative Text



Putri Kandita

          Once upon a time in Pakuan (now Bogor), West Java, there was a king named Prabu Siliwangi who ruled the Pakuan Pajajaran kingdom. He had a beautiful empress and concubines. From the empress born a beautiful princess named Putri Kandita.
          Putri Kandita was a beloved daughter of Prabu Siliwangi. When she grew into an adult, she inherited her father’s prudent and wise character and the king intented to make her to be his successor. But the concubines and their children who didn’t like that plan conspired to expel Putri Kandita and her mother from the kingdom.
          From the meeting they agreed to ask the shaman to help them and he granted it. He bewitched Putri Kandita and her mother with leprosy and ulcers. The king was really surprised to see the condition of his empress and daughter and he immediately invited the doctors to heal them.
          The doctors from every regions came but no one was able to heal them. The days passed and the disease getting worse and the empress finally died by the disease. The king was very saddened about it. Knowing that Putri Kandita’s disease never getting better the concubines exhorted the king to expel Putri Kandita from the kingdom.
          Putri Kandita was then forced to leave the kingdom. She wandered aimlessly and eventually arrived at Southern beach. Tired of walking for days she then fell asleep. On her dream she heard a sound telling her to plunged herself into the sea. When she woke up she went into the sea and did it. Miraculously, when her skin touched the water, the disease gradually disappeared and she finally recovered.
          Even after recovered from her disease she reluctant to go back to the kingdom and in the end she chose to lived in the Southern beach. Since then, she is known by people as the Queen of Southern Sea.
